As regulations have evolved over the years, the installation of these isolators on rooftop solar systems has become mandatory. In accordance with the CEC's ruling, the following standards must be adhered to:

7.10 PV array DC isolator at the array (Not applicable for micro inverter and AC module systems). The positive and negative terminals of a solar array or sub-array can pose a high-risk hazard when the output voltage is 120V DC or above. Please note the following requirements for the PV array isolator at the array.

7.10.1 AS/NZS 5033:2014 Clause 4.4.1.5 mandates the installation of an isolator within 3 meters of the array, visible from both locations for LV systems. This allows for safe disconnection of the array and isolation of the PV array cable.

7.10.1.1 Isolators should not be installed mid-string. For instance, if an electrical string is split over different roof faces (all faces at the same orientation), one isolator is required at the point where the PV panel wiring transitions from the PV array to the fixed wiring to the inverter at the array.

7.10.2 Isolators must not be affixed to any portion of the panel.

7.10.3 Isolators should be securely fixed to supports using stainless steel screws or screws of galvanically similar material to minimize corrosion.

7.10.4 Isolators must have a minimum IP rating of IP 55 (Note: the CEC recommends using isolators rated to IP66).

7.10.5 Isolators should be UV resistant.

7.10.6 It is recommended to fix isolators using external fixing points on the enclosure to minimize penetrations and water ingress.

7.10.7 When using internal screws, designated screw locations must be utilized. A dangerous situation can arise if a wire becomes loose and makes contact with the fixing screw, potentially exposing the mounting structure to the full array voltage (see below).

7.10.8 All supplied screw cover caps for the isolator or junction box must be installed.

7.10.9 All internal mounting holes should be filled with silicone.
